Orchard Management Group (Dirleton School Partnership)
Inspite of the recent miserable weather, plant growth is stirring. Dirleton Primary have sweet pea seedlings sprouting and the children each took home a pot of seeds to start off over the half term break.
The Orchard Management Group are organising a WILLOW HARVEST on Saturday 28th February between 2 and 4pm in the Centennial Orchard. There will be a STALL at the Harvest selling both willow plant supports and pots of sweet pea seedlings – all for school funds. Help with cutting the willow would be greatly appreciated.
The ‘SPECIAL OFFER’ at this event will be a set of six tall willow uprights for a wigwam and a free pot of MIKE’S MIX SWEET PEA SEEDLINGS all for £5 – on a first come first served basis. Mike’s Mix is once again a generous donation of sweet pea seeds – they seem twice as fat as those in bought packets – so will get your growing off to a great start. Some pots of single colour heritage sweet peas will also be on sale.
The popular SWEET PEA COMPETITION will be repeated at this year’s FETE AND GAMES on June 20th. It will be in a dedicated gazebo this year – last year it got a bit windswept and soggy outside. The plan is to add a few other classes and suggestions welcomed. One thought is some HERB CLASSES. This links in with gardening at Dirleton Primary, where a splendid wall mural of herbs is taking shape in the playground. The plan is to set up Herb Planters in front of this mural. Any help with this or offers of herb plants would also be welcomed. Dirleton Market on the Green will be sponsoring the prizes. Thank You!
Price Lists for Willow Plant Supports are on the order forms (below) – do spread the word to keen gardeners. Advice sheets on sowing sweet pea seeds and growing up willow structure are also available. Just ask.
